Clans
In uncertain times, few stand alone. These are the orders, guilds, and organisations through which people find purpose, protection, and power within Athera. Each represents a different path, shaped by duty, ambition, faith, or necessity. Some serve the Crown, others operate beyond its reach, but all offer a place within a world where loyalty carries both reward and consequence.

Nimdir Watch
The Nimdir Watch serves as the Baron's sole force of arms within his domain, fulfilling the duties that in other lands might fall to retainers, household guards, or levy troops. Charged with maintaining order and safeguarding the lands of Nimdir, the Watch operates as both a civil authority within the town and a protective force across the surrounding countryside.
Based in the river-town of Nimdir, where the Nimross meets the great Aeos, the Watch oversees one of the most important junctions in northern Solvalore. Its members patrol the streets, guard the markets and gates, and maintain a steady presence along the riverfront, while also ranging beyond the town to secure roads, escort travellers, and respond to disturbances in nearby settlements. In this way, the Watch stands as a constant and visible extension of the Baron’s authority.
Drawn from local folk, seasoned veterans, and those seeking steady service, the Watch is a practical and disciplined force rather than a prestigious one. Its strength lies not in ceremony, but in familiarity with the land and the people it protects. Many within its ranks have seen service beyond Nimdir in years past, lending the Watch a quiet competence shaped by experience rather than formal distinction.
The Watch is commanded by a Captain who answers directly to Baron Sorad Balenor, supported by a cadre of seasoned officers responsible for maintaining discipline, organising patrols, and enforcing the Baron’s law. While its authority is firm within Nimdir and its surrounding lands, it does not extend to the nearby fortress of Kaer Durnath, whose garrison answers to the Sun Legion. Cooperation between the two forces is expected, though their duties and priorities remain distinct.
In a time of uneasy calm, as traffic along the rivers grows less certain and vigilance increases along the frontier, the Nimdir Watch has taken on a greater burden. To the people of Nimdir, they are a familiar presence—sometimes stern, often steady, and always a reminder that order endures so long as it is upheld.
Rangers of Solvalore
Not all who walk the lands of Solvalore do so openly. Beyond the roads and settlements, in the forests, hills, and quiet places between, there are said to be those who keep watch where others do not. They are rarely seen, and when they are, it is often only in passing-figures at a distance, or travellers who leave no trace behind them.
Among the people of the eastern marches, stories persist of wardens who move unseen along the borders, guiding the lost, observing the wilds, and intervening only when necessity demands it. Some speak of them as scouts in the service of the Crown, others as agents of older traditions, answering to no single lord. Whether these accounts describe one group or many is a matter of quiet speculation.
What is known is limited. The Rangers, if they exist as a unified order, maintain no visible presence in towns such as Nimdir, nor do they answer openly to local authority. Their work, whatever its true nature, appears to lie beyond the bounds of ordinary law and governance-concerned less with the keeping of order, and more with the watching of what lies beyond it.
To most, they are little more than rumour or passing mention. Yet among those who travel far from the safety of the roads, there are whispers of unseen eyes, and of dangers turned aside before they could ever be named.
Sun Legion
The Sun Legion stands as the Crown's foremost military force, charged with the defence of Solamir and the preservation of order across its provinces. Drawn from across the realm and bound by strict discipline and oath, its soldiers serve not a single lord or land, but the Crown itself. Wherever the Legion is present, its authority reflects that of the King, and its purpose is singular: to ensure that the realm endures.
Organised into cohorts and commanded by experienced officers, the Legion maintains a constant state of readiness, its strength lying in cohesion, training, and the careful application of force. Unlike local levies or household guards, the Legion is a professional army, its members bound to long service and expected to uphold standards that place duty above personal interest or regional loyalty.
In Solvalore, the Legion’s presence is most keenly felt at Kaer Durnath, a great fortress raised upon the Aeos River. From this position, the Legion controls one of the principal crossings between Solvalore and Solarion, regulating movement along the river and maintaining a vigilant watch over the approaches to the south. The garrison stationed there is maintained at a level of readiness befitting the importance of its charge, with patrols, inspections, and drills forming a constant part of daily life.
Though the Legion operates within the lands of Solvalore, its authority remains distinct from that of the local nobility. Command at Kaer Durnath answers to the Crown through the authority of the High Marshal of the Sun Legion, and while cooperation with local lords is expected, the Legion’s priorities are governed by the defence of the realm rather than the concerns of any single domain.
To most within the eastern marches, the Legion is a visible reminder of the Crown's reach-orderly, disciplined, and unyielding. Its soldiers are respected for their professionalism, if not always welcomed for the restrictions their presence can bring. In a time of uneasy calm, their vigilance stands as both reassurance and warning: that while peace may endure, it is neither assumed nor left unguarded.
